LinkedIn has over 1 billion members. It's a social media platform but is about as opposite from Instagram and TikTok as you can get. The irony is that all 3 platforms have many overlapping users, so saying that "we want to reach the TikTok crowd" is not a valid marketing goal. Many of those same users are also on LinkedIn, but approach the platforms differently and interact and communicate differently. However, overall the LinkedIn audience does tend to be somewhat older (mid 20s to mid 50s) and tends to have higher income than other platforms.
Here is how most people typically use LinkedIn, apart from job hunting:
- B2B lead generation
- Researching brands and products
- Keeping up to date with news and current events
- Posting/sharing photos and videos
- Looking for funny or entertaining content
So here are a few tips you can use to make the most of LinkedIn for your business:
- Make sure your page is 100% complete
- Write your Profile in the 1st person as if you were introducing yourself
- Use keywords in your Headline section
- Consider including gender pronouns
- Consider turning Creator Mode on if you post thought leadership content. This will allow you to include hashtags in your "Talks about" section. Example.
- Use a professional headshot with only you in it (please don't crop your significant other out of your wedding photo!)
- Replace the standard banner with something designed that represents your profession, or with you at work, with your team, speaking, your favorite skyline, etc.
- Share content posted by employees on the company page
- A comment within a few minutes of posting is the best gift you can give someone to help the algorithm spread the word
- Reply to comments you receive (quickly)
- Comment on trending news in your industry
- Experiment with polls (example: A or B)
- Hashtags are important but stick to 2 or 3
- Sprinkle in some humor - we all love memes
- Mix in short, tweet-like posts with longer, storytelling or position posts
- When you connect with someone in real life, connect with them on LinkedIn
- Post a few times per week
- Plan to spend about 20 mins/day on LinkedIn. Keep an eye on messaging, add connections, and comment on content.
